Statement on the Edgar Ng Case
Hong Kong Marriage Equality applauds today’s judgement in the Court of First Instance, which held that married same-sex couples should be treated equally as their heterosexual counterparts in inheritance and intestacy.
The judgement is yet another important victory for LGBT+ equality. It sends a clear signal to society that unequal treatment of same-sex couples is not justified.
Hong Kong aspires to be a leading world city in the world but we are dragging our feet when it comes to LGBT+ equality. The government should seize this opportunity to work with the LGBT+ community to implement marriage equality in the city.
Same-sex marriage is currently available in 29 countries and territories, and Thailand is set to become the second jurisdiction in Asia to recognize same-sex union.
