Statement on the Final Order of the Sham Tsz-kit Same-sex Marriage Case

“We urge the government to work proactively with stakeholders so that a comprehensive framework can be implemented within the mandated timeframe for the legal recognition of same-sex partnerships.

“Together with the recent Court of Appeal judgements, Hong Kong courts have handed down a total of seven pro-equal treatment decisions regarding the rights of same-sex couples.

“The message couldn’t be more clear – Hong Kong laws require the government to treat same-sex couples equally. More importantly, same-sex couples deserve to live a dignified life.

“A piecemeal approach is unworkable and goes against the spirit and letter of the Sham decision. The only proven solution is same-sex marriage, and the Basic Law, according to the Sham decision, does not bar the government from implementing it.”
