Love Wins in Asia

Hong Kong Marriage Equality Applauds Taiwanese legislature’s vote today that makes its the first territory in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

The landmark vote is further proof that the time has come for other places in Asia to embrace a more inclusive definition of marriage for all people. In Hong Kong, a public survey by the Center for Comparative and Public Law at The University of Hong Kong has already established that a majority of people support same-sex marriage, and we strongly urge the government to move to the right side of history and to make Hong Kong the second place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

Gigi Chao, co-founder of HKME, said: “We are incredible thrilled with today’s landmark vote in Taiwan, after years of challenges and setbacks. This proves that above all else, we must never give up. We now know that marriage equality can be achieved across different societies and cultures, once public understanding becomes widespread. Same-sex marriage values are traditional values – we embrace the concept of family as as a unifying force in our Asian society.”
